“Sorry. I was calling 'Robots-Take-Over-The-World Headquarters.”

“I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.”

This chapter provides an introduction to commercially available applications that use speech technology. As of 2000 the speech software market is dominated by speech recognition suites—collections of software that apply speech to more than one function, for example, dictation, command-and-control, and text-to-speech. In addition, many applications have been developed for vertical markets, such as the medical and legal professions. These vertical market packages are discussed in Chapter 8: Application of Speech Technology, along with proprietary systems that illustrate the various applications of speech recognition, synthesis, and telephony.
