This book is the result of several factors that I have experienced. The first is the reaction that some people had to Designing Organizations: An Executive Briefing on Strategy, Structure, and Process. Many people who like conceptual material liked the book. Others found it a “tough read.” They asked if there was some way to make the book more understandable. Diane Downey and Amy Kates have been making my work, and the work others do, more understandable for many people for a long time. It seemed natural for us to collaborate on a readable version of Designing Organizations.
