Making Sense of Type

A good way to begin your study of type is to separate type into three categories, organized by function. Although these categories blend into each other, organizing by function encourages you to use different standards for choosing typeface designs for each function.

Type for Recognition

The most flexible category of type consists of typefaces intended for use in logos, publication titles, and product packaging. Here, the goal is to project an appropriate and easily recognized image. To achieve this goal, you can break many of the rules concerning typeface readability and get away with it, as shown in Figure 7-1, because logos and titles are intended to be recognized more than to be read.
