What Design Is—and What It Isn’t

Think of design as a lever, or a multiplier. Design takes everyday words and arranges them in a way that attracts attention, presells their importance, and makes them easy to understand.

Consider an unformatted page, as shown in Figure 1-1. Every word is set in the same typeface and type size. Every word necessary to communicate your message is present, yet few people are likely to read them. There’s no starting point for the message, and there’s nothing to help readers along.
