4.7. Case Studies

Two case studies are presented in this section. A design for tracked vehicle roadarm demonstrates a practical application of topology optimization and shape optimization as well as a geometric smoothing technique that converts the result of topology optimization into smooth parametric geometric surfaces for shape optimization. The second case demonstrates shape sensitivity analysis for a three-dimensional multiscale dynamic crack propagation problem, in which performance measures are crack propagation speed defined at atomistic level obtained by solving coupled atomistic/continuum structures using the bridging scale method (BSM) (Wagner and Liu 2003).
