Structural Design Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract

In this chapter, we provide a broad but brief discussion on the topic of design sensitivity analysis (DSA), which calculates gradients (or derivatives) of structural performance measures with respect to design variables. Sensitivity analysis is essential for gradient-based optimization algorithms, in which accurate and efficient computation methods are desirable. In this chapter, we narrow our focus to structural problems—more specifically, linear elastic structures under static loads—to introduce basic concepts and solution methods in DSA with enough depth so that readers become familiar with this topic and are able to implement some of the techniques for support of engineering design.
