Abstract: One area where multimodality is becoming essential is the design of Avatars and Virtual agents (A&VA). This multidisciplinary area combines several design capabilities that must work together. This chapter reviews the development of Avatars and Virtual Agents as part of the Human Machine Interaction (HMI) field, with an emphasis on the needs and challenges raised by user requirements and demands.
