Introduction

This book is aimed at network engineers who need to have an understanding of DSL technology and how it is deployed in real networks today. Some background information is provided so that readers can appreciate the problems that DSL can solve and understand some of the challenges still ahead. Readers need to know basic IP operation in order to easily grasp the concept of different ATM encapsulations often used in this book. Although not required, knowledge of dial-up networks may help readers breeze through the encapsulation portion of this book because the same technology used in dial-up networks is also used in DSL aggregation.
