The Access Network

The access concentrator has several thousand VCs coming in to its ATM interface through the ATM cloud. It has several options to convert these VCs into the IP packet, and each of these methods has a standard associated with it. Some of the methods are as follows:

  • RFC 1483 bridging

  • RFC 1483 bridging with RBE

  • RFC 1483 routing

  • PPPoA

  • PPPoE

For each of the service architectures, one access encapsulation method will be selected and explained. Each service architecture basically covers the following:

  • Basic architecture— Provides a brief overview of the encapsulation method and problems this architecture will solve.

  • Operational description— Provides a technology overview of the access encapsulation method
