This chapter covers the following key topics:

• The ADSL Functional Segment — The ADSL model is segmented into three segments: customer premises equipment (CPE), network access provider (NAP), and network service provider (NSP). To understand the different service architectures discussed in the next chapter, it is necessary to have the background of how each segment works.

• CLECs and ILECs — Competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) came into existence when the FCC passed laws mandating phone companies to share the last mile copper loops with other companies.
