Wireless Terminology and Evolution

Today, you can design and build wireless networks that possess three characteristics that were not available in the past. These characteristics are broadband capability, wide-area coverage, and license-free operation. The definition of these terms is somewhat vague; therefore, it is important to define the terms clearly. The following sections provide these definitions as well as some wireless history.

Broadband

Broadband is a subjective term that has been used in various ways throughout the communications industry. Broadband is used when new communications technologies are developed that provide enough additional bandwidth for the user experience to feel substantially faster than it felt before.
