On August 26, 1346, the English army led by King Edward III and French forces under the command of King Philip VI met south of Calais near the village of Crécy-en-Ponthieu (see Illustration 17.1). Both armies were quite formidable by fourteenth-century standards; however the French side outnumbered the English by a healthy ratio of at least three to one.
