See Yourself as a Teacher

ONE OF THE KEY responsibilities of the manager is to teach employees how to do the job, and to use delegation as a teaching tool.

When I was first promoted into management, as the result of having done a good job as an employee, I found myself dealing with people who were always asking me questions about how to do a particular job.

Sometimes, these people were college graduates; other times they were experienced businesspeople. But when I sat with them to delegate a task, they would look at me blankly. Sometimes, they looked a little pained and nervous. I eventually found out that this insecurity on their part was because they did not know how to do the job I was asking them to do.
