Chapter 9. Disaster All Around

The role of a security professional has been growing. Numerous additional, perhaps tangentially related, issues are now a part of the job and at a minimum demand that those in the security profession be knowledgeable in these areas. These issues include information privacy (especially given the alarming rise of identity theft), policy development, and disaster recovery.

In the case study presented here, a firm was caught off guard, and disaster struck before well-developed plans could be implemented. Some quick thinking and fast acting on the part of the IT staff allowed the firm to weather the storm and survive, but hopefully this case will underscore the need to be prepared for the unexpected disaster.
