Finding the Source of the Trouble

I know of a company that was forced to downsize. The CEO recognized that in addition to downsizing, the company also needed to eliminate work from the system. He argued that downsizing without an accompanying plan to remove tasks from the system would merely result in workforce burnout.

At the start of the downsizing process, the CEO delivered a clear message to every member of the organization. He pointed out that a large amount of work must be eliminated. He made it clear that the only activities that could not be cut out were those that were required by law, necessary for ethical reasons, or absolutely essential to organizational survival.
