Confronting the Integrity Gap

Often when we evaluate a situation from a fresh perspective, it helps to clarify the actions we need to take. The resulting actions may present a series of risks. However, to initiate a deep change, we must confront a path littered by many risks and unforeseen challenges.

Professor William Torbert, at Boston College, teaches a self-examination technique to help his business students grow and develop. The approach includes writing descriptions of certain key personal experiences. The following example was written by one of his students, Steve Thompson, a project manager for an underwater pipeline construction company. Thompson describes a critical confrontation between himself and his boss, Ron Cedrick.
