Introduction

In this tutorial we’re going to create a realistic afterburner effect. Quite simple, you may think; however, fire is virtually impossible to photograph accurately, i.e., it represents exactly what we see with the naked eye. Herein lies the problem: we’re basing our scene construction on an image which has been captured as a specific exposure depending on whether it was taken at night or during the day. Therefore, we’ll study several images with different exposures to glean as much detail as possible about the emissions, color, shape, and intricate formations within the flame.
