The most fundamental of the four principles of Decision Management Systems is the first—begin with the decision in mind. Decision Management Systems are focused on automating and improving specific decisions. Decision Management Systems do not execute complete business processes; they provide decision-making to allow other processes to execute more effectively or to run straight through without manual intervention. Decision Management Systems do not replace complete legacy systems; they replace hard to change decision-making components of legacy systems with more manageable, more agile components.
