In recent years XML has continued to emerge as the de-facto standard for data exchange, because it is flexible, extensible, self-describing, and suitable for any combination of structured and unstructured data. With the increasing use of XML as a pervasive data format, there is a growing need to store, index, query, update, and validate XML documents in database systems.
