64-Bit Support

64-bit computing allows for the creation of larger buffer pools, sort heaps, and other memory-intensive resources. When applications can exploit 64-bit features, they most often see a performance improvement as more data can be moved in a single CPU cycle.

DB2 UDB v7.2 included support for 64-bit computing and DB2 instances on HP-UX, Sun, and AIX systems. Core support was part of the DB2 UDB v7.2 release for these platforms, but other features were missing (e.g., there was no “vanilla” connectivity mechanism for a 32-bit client connecting to a 64-bit server, there were no GUI tools, etc.).

DB2 UDB v8.1 completes the support picture for 64-bit computing and DB2 UDB servers. Details for Linux and Windows 64-bit support are discussed ...
