Chapter 7. User-Maintained Materialized Query Tables

A materialized query table (MQT) is a table that has a definition based on the result set of a query. The data in the result set is taken from the one or more tables identified in a query. Judicious use of MQTs can result in tremendous performance improvements, especially for complex queries issued against large tables. MQTs eliminate work for queries by doing computations once, when the MQTs are built and refreshed. They can reuse the updated content for many queries. DB2 UDB v8.1 introduces user-maintained MQTs, thus increasing the flexibility with which MQTs can be implemented (these are also known as user-maintained summary tables).
