Supported Data Types for Compression

For DB2 UDB v8.1 to compress data and not store the data on disk, the column's value must be easily known to the database engine during record formatting and data extraction. There are data values and situations when data is not eligible for compression and is therefore always stored on disk.

As of DB2 UDB 8.1.2, only system-generated default values are eligible for compression. User-defined data defaults for columns are not eligible for compression and are stored on disk. However, the new row format does provide the underlying architecture so that this might become an option in a future release of DB2 UDB.

All of DB2 UDB's data types are eligible for compression, except for the TIME, DATE, and TIMESTAMP
