Chapter 4. Using the Flash

Your Sony Alpha has a flip-up electronic flash unit built in, but you can also use an external flash (or, “strobe” or “speedlight”), either mounted on the Sony Alpha’s accessory shoe or used off-camera and linked with a cable or triggered by a slave light (which sets off a flash when it senses the firing of another unit). This chapter deals primarily with using the camera’s built-in flash; the options and permutations of working with one or more external flash units are so vast that squeezing more than an overview into a compact book would be impossible. You’ll find the equivalent of more than 100 pages of coverage in my full-size books, David Busch’s Sony Alpha A55/A33 and A35 Guides to Digital SLR Photography.
