10.3. Normal Forms

A normal form is a state of a relation that results from applying simple rules regarding functional dependencies (FDs) to that relation. It refers to the highest normal form of condition that it meets. Hence, it indicates the degree to which it has been normalised. The normal forms are used to ensure that various types of anomalies and inconsistencies are not introduced into the database.
