7.1. Introduction

The transition from logical to physical database design marks a change in focus and in the skills required. In this chapter, we are going to develop a set of data structures, making those structures perform on a particular hardware platform using the facilities of our selected database management system (DBMS). Instead of business and generic data structuring skills, we require a detailed knowledge of general performance-tuning techniques and of the facilities provided by the DBMS.
