ASM Instances
Starting in Oracle Database 10g, the two types of Oracle instances are relational database management system (RDBMS) and Automatic Storage Management (ASM). An ASM instance is similar to any Oracle database instance in that it has a Shared Global Area (SGA) and most of the standard background processes associated with an Oracle database instance. ASM instances do not mount databases, but instead mount disk groups. This chapter focuses on the ASM instance architecture.
