A robust database archiving system should have the ability to:

  • Keep data for a very long period of time
  • Support a very large volume of data
  • Provide independence from operational application programs
  • Allow independence from operational database systems
  • Provide independence from operational computing systems
  • Encapsulate sufficient metadata to explain data content
  • Introduce minimal disruption of operational systems when performing extracts
  • Implement a policy-based extraction criteria based on data values in the database
