Chapter 7. Locating Data

Your archiving project begins with finding the data that applies to the mandate set forth in the organizing effort. The project mandate can be very specific, as in targeting a specific operational database, or very vague, as in a mandate to retain a type of data. Even if your mandate is specific, care must be taken to not miss a pocket of data that is related to the mandate but is not part of the mainstream operational processing.

It is important to find all the data related to the application, including copies of data. As you will see, sometimes these need to be considered in building a comprehensive archiving and discard plan for the application, taking into consideration all the requirements.
