Chapter 4. Components of a Database Archiving System

Now that we have covered the general concepts of archiving as it applies to the physical as well as the electronic world, we are ready to shift our focus to database archiving. Some of the concepts presented from here on could well apply to other forms of archiving, but again, our concentration will be on database archiving.

Figure 4.1 presents the basic parts of a fully designed and ready-to-use database archiving solution. Any of the components can be implemented as a procedure, a set of executable scripts, or a computer program. This chapter emphasizes that each component is necessary and the form it takes can vary depending on a particular implementation approach (or budget).
