THE DIRECTIVE ON PRIVACY AND ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS

The DPEC was introduced as part of the process known as ‘convergence’, which occurred in 2002. Convergence is the name given to the process whereby the EC widened European telecommunications law to cover all electronic communications, hence the law on telecommunications, the internet and broadcasting was said to have converged (the application of electronic communications law to the broadcasting sector is limited, covering matters such as video on demand services where the broadcaster and the subscriber send and receive electronic communications).
