Preface

Like many kids growing up in America, I always had a love of science. I also happened to be blessed with two incredibly supportive and involved parents. My mother was always there with words of encouragement. Her typing skills got me through high school and most of college. She also led by example, balancing her work as a probation and parole officer with her role as wife and mother. My father, on the other hand, would try to learn as much as he could about what we were interested in so that he could participate in the activities with us. When I started graduate school, however, there was something of a dilemma. What do an engineer and a budding neuroscientist have in common, particularly when the engineer is not big on things like rats ...
