About the Author

Laura Madsen is the author of the book Healthcare Business Intelligence: A Guide to Empowering Successful Data Reporting and Analytics (John Wiley & Sons, 2012). Laura has 15 years of experience in BI and data warehousing for healthcare as well as a passion for engaging and educating the BI community.

Laura leads the Enterprise BI and Analytics Program at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. At Children's she is charged with creating a data-driven healthcare organization. During her career, she has initiated and supported countless BI initiatives and worked with more than 50 health plans. Prior to joining Children's, Laura spent over five years as a consultant, providing guidance and advice to a multitude of healthcare organizations across the country. She has held senior positions with several leading healthcare technology companies, including UnitedHealth Group, and a national pharmacy benefit management company. During her tenure, her responsibilities included leading an enterprise BI project from pre-concept to execution, managing a commercially available suite of BI tools, and advising both business and IT leaders on effective healthcare BI practices.

In 2006 Laura co-founded the Twin Cities chapter of The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI), and in 2008 she founded the Healthcare BI Summit. Laura gives talks nationally and internationally about the importance and power of data in healthcare.
