What is Big Data?

Abstract

What is Big Data? There are different definitions of Big Data. The definition used in this book is that Big Data stores almost unlimited amounts of data, data is stored in an affordable manner, data is managed by the “Roman Census” approach, and all data residing in Big Data is unstructured. The Roman census approach refers to the technique of taking processing to the data rather than moving the processing to the processor. Unstructured data means that the form and structure of the data is determined upon the reading of the data. Classical structured data is said to be “structure upon write” whereas unstructured data in Big Data is said to be “structure upon read.”
