What Is Data Mining?

Some of the tools and terms used in data mining are from the school of statistics, such as regression, correlation, and standard deviation. Although some may define data mining as its own area of study, I view it as a branch of statistics.

Data mining uses the modern power of computers and algorithms and has received a fair amount of press. It is designed to take large amounts of disorganized and noisy data and try to discern patterns that can be predictive. Data mining can also be a good tool to find outliers from certain patterns.
