Darkroom Dynamics

John Heartfield, finding the techniques of photomontage suited to the expression of his political and visual convictions, created brilliantly original anti-fascist propaganda between the world wars. Heartfield’s title in this 1935 piece reads “Hurrah, the butter is all gone.” The caption below is from a speech made by Goering in Hamburg: “Iron has made an empire strong, butter and oil have only made the people fat.”
