Setting up the SVG

At the top of our app.js file, add the following:

var WIDTH = 300;
var HEIGHT = 200;

d3.select("svg")
    .attr("width", WIDTH)
    .attr("height", HEIGHT);

If we open index.html in Chrome and look at Elements in the Developer tools, we should see the following:
