Stressing education Children in care
In this chapter Felicity Fletcher-Campbell reviews the routes by which children arrive in care and stresses the importance of continuity in planning the education of children in care. She argues that education may be neglected when discussions take place about the needs of children taken into care, and that low expectations for educational achievement may have far-reaching consequences.
Of the current under-18 population in England and Wales who are of statutory school age, about 66,000 (only a little over 0.5 per cent) are ‘in care’ but, although the actual numbers may be relatively small, their associated problems are often considerable.
