The Dark Side of Democracy at Work

Before finishing this chapter it is very important to acknowledge that – in addition to the questions highlighted earlier about the tension between visionary leaders and broad participation – democracy at work is not always the easiest policy to take or to stick with.

Democratic decision making can feel slow and costly: sometimes it requires the involvement of many rather than just a few; sometimes decisions can require lots of people to invest quite a bit of time (a thorough conversation can take several hours). In a context of urgent business pressures and the need to get things done, that can be very hard to stomach – especially for those who remain on the fence.
