We shall begin this demonstration by repeating an experiment made by Joseph Henry in 1849. He was a scientist and the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The U.S. Congress asked Henry to collaborate in the design of an auditorium for the new Smithsonian building. He was concerned about echoes in the auditorium, so as a scientist, he set out to perform some echo experiments. One of the first was to go outside and listen intently to the echoes of his handclaps from the wall of a building.
