Inverted Acts, Perverted Identities, and Criminal Desire in Germany 1864–1914

The tension between acts and identity surrounding the history of homosexuality has long troubled research on sexuality. The trouble usually begins with quoting the passage from Foucault’s History of Sexuality Volume 1, where he writes about the shift in the nineteenth century from discrete, transgressive acts to the emergence of a species called the homosexual:
