Foreword
Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is not a new concept. The phrase was coined by C. Ray Jeffery in 1971, but a significant contributor to the concept of CPTED was renowned criminologist Timothy D. Crowe, a legend in the security industry. His book, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (1991), is a primary resource for crime-prevention practitioners in the security industry to help them better understand the relationship between design and human behavior. CPTED is not a reactive discipline. Rather, it is a proactive approach to manipulate the physical environment and bring about the desired behavior of reduced criminal activity as well as reduced fear of crime.
