In one of our seminars participants were talking about leaders they admired when the vice president of a large petrochemical company challenged everyone with this question: “Was Charles Manson a leader?” In his opinion, Charles Manson fit the definition of a credible leader: he had loyal followers and strong beliefs about what was appropriate conduct. He was dynamic and spoke passionately about what he believed. Others at the seminar suggested additional notorious villains who might be added to the list—Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Josef Stalin, Pol Pot, Osama bin Laden.
