We learn rules of lighting for a reason. They help us to flatter our subjects and avoid unpleasant lighting situations. They help us to control the viewer’s eye and create a pleasant viewing experience. You’ve likely heard rules like “avoid lens flare,” “don’t overexpose your highlights,” “don’t light from beneath,” “don’t allow your subject’s shadow to hit the background,” and many more. Learn the rules. Then, effectively break the rules!

Breaking the rules well leads to high-impact imagery. Photos that break the rules are unexpected and unique, and they capture the viewer’s attention because they do not blend in with the mundane images that follow every rule.
