Brainstorming Guidelines

Brainstorming is a way of producing a large quantity of ideas so that the likelihood of coming up with at least one high-quality idea is increased. As Nobel laureate Linus Pauling once said, “The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.” Guidelines for brainstorming are as follows:

  1. Agree to participate in a brainstorming exercise.
  2. Appoint a facilitator and a note taker.
  3. Focus on a single problem or issue. Don't skip around to various problems or try to brainstorm answers to a complex, multiple-factor problem.
  4. Have people record their responses to the problem or issue silently and individually on a sheet of scratch paper.
