Lights and Lighting
Video depends on light. It's our basic raw material. Light hits our subject and is reflected into the lens. The CCD changes the light into an electrical signal that, after some processing, is recorded as video. Using light well and controlling light are critical to making good video.
In this chapter, we'll look at characteristics of light, and then see how we can light our scenes to best effect.
Color and Intensity
All light is not the same. We can describe light as soft, bright, or harsh or use terms like spotlight or floodlight. In describing lighting for video, we'll use a fairly specific vocabulary so we can describe and specify light in ways that we all understand the same way.
