Dry-Ice Generators

The swirling clouds of white mist used for ‘dream sequences’ are produced by immersing solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) in hot water. The resulting clouds are a mixture of water vapour and liberated carbon dioxide gas.

Simple generation

Solid carbon dioxide is supplied in conveniently-sized blocks that can be broken up with a hammer. Dropped into hot water the pieces produce copious clouds of vapour, but in doing so make an audible bubbling noise. As it gives off its heat, the water quickly cools and turns to ice. The effect diminishes in proportion with the lowering temperature.

Controlled generation

A well designed and constructed generator avoids cooling-off problems. The water is heated electrically and its temperature ...
