In his last book, The Coldest Winter, David Halberstam writes eloquently about the price soldiers had to pay in the Korean war because of the arrogance and lack of inquiry of its regional commander, General Douglas McArthur. McArthur refused to listen to intelligence reports on the gathering strength of the Chinese Army along Korea’s northern border, and ordered his troops into what turned out to be a needless blood bath.
