Chapter 1. Understanding High Availability for Databases
The phrase “highly available architecture” means different things to different people. If you were to ask 10 Chief Technology Officers what they understand about high availability (HA), you would get 10 different answers. In general, when we refer to availability, we are referring to the percentage of time a system or an application is available to perform its functions correctly. This definition does not address issues like the duration, frequency, or impact of failure, which are some of the criteria used to assess whether availability requirements warrant an HA solution.
