1 Putting craigslist on the Map

In early 1995, the Internet was still in its infancy. Although many technophiles and academics were regularly using electronic bulletin boards and newsgroups, Internet access for the home was just beginning to catch on. With the advent of the World Wide Web, however, people were beginning to share information in new ways. It was in this new cyberspace that a San Francisco–based software engineer named Craig Newmark observed people helping each other online—the beginning of online networking and virtual communities.
