According to the Covert Processes Model, every focal system has a prism of beliefs that interprets and makes meaning of the world. Those things the prism interprets as being “legitimate, proper, acceptable, or reasonable” can be put on-the-table and engaged; anything interpreted through the prism as “unacceptable or illegitimate” is denied or unexpressed. Sometimes you need to confront one or more blocking beliefs in the focal system’s prism in order to put something on-the-table and engage it successfully.
